Coptic binding or sewing was developed in the 2nd century A.D. by the early Egyptian Christians in Egypt. Very few Coptic bindings survive in their original bindings although we do have evidence that the text was usually held between boards and these may, or may not, have been covered with leather.
Coptic sewing can be done along the spine or across the spine for more unusual and decorative effects. The main advantage of the Coptic sewing, because there is no gluing of the spine, is that it opens flat.
In this workshop we will sew across the spine and undertake three different sewing techniques – the most basic being the chain stitch, then the Celtic weave and finally the icicle, developed by Keith Smith. These are shown in the image above.
