Three Linked Classes

Sewing on Tapes                                                           Course Code: JT109
Sunday 1st September  Half Day 1.00 - 4 .00pm
Tutor: John Turner
Course Fee: $35
You will be shown how to set up the sewing frame and how to sew the sections. You may take this course as an individual outing or look on it as preparation for Dave Newbold’s Leather Spine binding class on October 19th.
Bring your own book  already disbound into sections or newly folded blank sections ready to sew.  We also have sets of pages to bind for sale at the Bindery. These should be well pressed for a couple of days before the class.

Paring Leather                                                             Course Code: WS1409
Tutor: Wayne Stock
Saturday September 14th  12.30-3.30 pm
Course Fee: Half day $35   plus materials fee to Wayne for  knife and leather
Locally made paring knives, sharpened and ready to use will be available for purchase from Wayne. In this class you will gain experience in leather paring to prepare you for Dave’s class.
Further you paring skills under Wayne's supervision.

Making a Case Binding with a Leather Spine          Course Code: DN1910
Tutor: David Newbold
Saturday   19th October 9.00- 4.00 pm
Fee: Full Day $75 includes some materials
Your text block will already be sewn on tapes.  During the  class, you will make a case for your book; the spine will be covered with leather, and the boards will be covered with book cloth or paper from the  bindery stocks. This will give you experience with a  classic book binding style. There will also be other demonstrations as time allows.

Repairing Paperbacks and Binding Single Sheets Sunday September 29th

Printouts from  the internet, collapsed paperbacks and complete sets of pages can be converted into functioning books in a surprisingly short time.

               
The methods to be taught will use simple equipment to demonstrate
    •    Japanese stab binding,
    •    Double fanned edged gluing,
    •    Lumbeck method: this is a little more complex but can be used to make hard cover books.

Exploring the Bindery

Fee: $65 for members; $95 for non-members includes 6 months membership, materials included.

Our bindery is home to a wonderful range of finishing equipment. You have probably seen the blocking presses but we also have a collection of antique hand tools for you to try out in a relaxed atmosphere.


Handle Letters                 
The class will be divided into two groups and John will show how to use the blocking presses and handled tools. Adrienne will show how to colour and decorate edges, and demonstrate fore edge painting which you will then be able to try out on paperbacks trimmed in the guillotine. At lunchtime the groups will rotate.


There will also be demonstrations of simple book cloth onlays and using a soldering iron as a free hand gildng tool.
Items to Bring: Lunch, 2 paperbacks, knife, ruler, pencil, apron etc
Tea and coffee provided
John is available on his rostered Sundays to help with further use of the blocking press.

RAS Arts and Craft Reminder



The RAS Easter Arts and Craft Competition for 2013
Entries Online close next week.


The Sydney Royal Easter Show offers an online facility for most Competitions. Where this facility is not available, Exhibitors can download an Application for Entry form. Entering online has several advantages for Exhibitors:

    •    Cheaper. Online entries do not incur the Offline Processing fee of $8 (incl. GST) per Exhibitor
    •    Quicker. Receive instant confirmation that your application has been received
    •    More efficient. Online entries reduce the processing time for the RAS.

Online entries for the Arts and Crafts Competitions at the 2013 Sydney Royal Easter Show are now open.
