EXHIBITION OF HAND BOUND  BOOKS

Kindle your interest in the permanence and beauty of books hand bound and exhibited by members of the NSW Guild of Craft Bookbinders.  Traditional hand tooled bindings in leather and vellum in the English and European styles by Sydney professional binders will be shown; others will represent contemporary design bindings in which the binder expresses a response to the text of the book.  Members of the Study Groups will show a Chinese scroll, medieval Coptic and Islamic books.  Come and see artist and architectural books, which focus on artistic content, rather than text. Some of these books will also form an exhibition called Library Bound which will be circulated to interested Libraries, so that people can see how a book is made and watch a member demonstrate how a book is hand sewn. Bookbinding is deeply historical and tells the story of our shared heritage in all cultures and from all continents.

Viewing of this collection is free to all.

Where: NSW Writers Centre, Callan Park, Balmain Road, Rozelle

Dates: May 4^th to 30^th 2012

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm,   Saturday 9am to 1pm

Transport by car: Enter at the traffic lights in Balmain Rd opposite Cecily Street, or, at lights on the corner of Perry and Wharf Roads, opposite Orange Grove School and follow the green signs to the Writers Centre.  

Bus: 440 and 445 stop on  Balmain Road near both entrances. 500 series buses stop on Victoria Road near Balmain Road.

Writers' Centre Exhibition May 2012

Preparations are moving along for the Exhibition. 

If you are unable to come to the opening, 5.30 to 7 Friday night 4th May, (still time to reply) and you want to put a book in the exhibition,  remember that the Bindery will be  closed on 25th April, but there will be someone there all day on Saturday 28th.  Printable entry forms for the Writers’ Centre and the Travelling Exhibition were attached to two recent emails and Exhibition Coordinator Monica Oppen has printed a small supply and left them at the Bindery.

The exhibition will be on view in the foyer of the Writers’ Centre until Wednesday 30th May, after which you may collect your books.

Letterpress printed labels look very well on repaired books.

We have bought new stocks of  binders board in A3 pieces, much easier to carry home. This board has been compressed and is acid free.  The sizes are 1.75, 2.75 and 3mm.  If there is sufficient demand we can get board cut to A2 size. The paper drawers are well supplied

We also have good supplies of linen thread, beeswax, mull, and bone folders. Some awls are on order as a trial.

ORIENTAL/JAPANESE BOOKBINDING STYLES

A one day Workshop with Jean Riley

Date: Saturday  29th September

10 am to 4 pm at the Bindery, Writers Centre, Callan Park Balmain Rd,   Rozelle

Course Fee:  $85 Includes all materials.

Places:  Minimum 5 Maximum 8

• Skill Level:  for beginners upward,.
•  You will learn how to back silk with paper for use in covering books.  
• You will then be introduced to six different styles of oriental stitching for making books and will produce a set of small sample books in a protective case for future reference. 
• Finally you will use your silk backed cloth and the sewing style of your choice to create your own oriental style book.  Full directions for the sewing styles will be given and these directions can be used in your final book

FIrst Workshops for 2012

We have three workshops arranged.


They are  suited  to all skill levels.

Some members have wanted to learn about using a printing press for years and now we offer a full introductory weekend with the people from Hill End press. 5/6 May





Jean Riley will teach an information  packed day class on japanese stab bindings and silk mounting. 28th July






Adrienne Allen will offer more insights into the messy and creative world of paste paper decoration. 28th April

JCA Steel Entries at Leichhardt Library

The JCA Steel Competition

Monica Oppen  and Anne Eagar have set up the competition entries at Leichhardt Library. 

They have been photographed and images will be viewable on the website.

Leichhardt Library will be closed 24, 25, 26, 27 December and 1, 2 January.
The show ends 31st January and books can be picked up from the Bindery from Wednesday 8th February.

The Judges' Comments follow:

The variety of bindings presented a challenge to the judges. All books were given a mark based on these criteria:

imaginative use of materials

innovation in binding and
overall artistic expression. 

Although some works showed a very high standard of binding, the works were strictly judged by the criteria.
The first and second prize winning works both received high marks for the first twocriteria but what set the winning piece apart was its higher level of overall artistic expression. The second prize showed finesse in its presentation. The third prize showed an integration of materials and attention to detail.
